A podcast may seem like an odd medium nowadays. You may have tried it a couple of times but weren’t really impressed. With all the video content on the internet, listening just to an audio seems like a retro thing to do. Below, I listed my favorite 11 podcasts about design or design related topics.
I used to listen to random design talks on Youtube, like the TED Talks or diverse design conference talks. It’s a great way to discover and learn about new topics. But after a while, you will find yourself spending more time searching than watching the videos. This is where podcasts come in handy.
There is a lot of very interesting content out there, updated on a weekly basis. Once you find a few shows to start with, you will appreciate the convenience of this format.
You can listen to a podcast while commuting, cooking, doing your laundry or just any shallow work. You can start by listening directly in your browser, but I highly recommend you using a podcast app like the default Apple Podcast or Overcast on iOS. That way, you can enjoy your favorite show anywhere. You can also automatically download the latest episode and listen offline.
Here are my 11 favorite podcasts about design or design related topics. The order is rather random, so feel free to start wherever you want.
The Layout podcast is currently my favorite show, hosted by Kevin Clark (@vernalkick) and Rafael Conde (@rafahari). On every episode, they cover one design topic, being mostly product design related. And then, they just go on about design tools, apps, Apple, business, movies, tv shows and everything else. It’s really fun to listen to.
The Nice To Meet You show is a personal conversation based podcast with makers and builders, hosted by Tobias van Schneider. Tobias is a German, self-taught designer, living in New York City. During his very successful career, he has worked with companies like Red Bull, NASA, BMW, Google, Wacom, Sony and many many more. Obviously, he has a lot of connections and a whole lot to share. In each of 16 episodes, Tobias interviews designers and entrepreneurs about their work and work habits.
Much like the NTMY show, Workmode is a series of conversations with leading creators on how they get their work done, hosted by Alex Nemeroff, Co-Founder of Dynamo. One of my favorites episodes is the one with the famous Clark from InVision! The guy is real!
And yet another conversation based show. Overtime is Dribbble's official podcast, hosted by Dan Cederholm. It is a great way to learn about other designers work and to find inspiration.
If you know Dribbble, the chances are, you heard of Designer News as well. Be sure not to miss their podcast! And guess what, they also have Clark on the show.
One of my most favorite shows it the Gimlet’s Media StartUp. Especially the first season hosted by Alex Blumberg, in which he tells the story of building the Gimlet Media company. Alex gives a very honest and exclusive insight into how it really is to start an own business. In the next seasons, they cover stories of other start-ups.
The Responsive Web Design podcast has been around for a while. In March 2018, there are 155 episodes. RWD is co-hosted by Karen McGrane and Ethan Marcotte, which you may know as the authors of Content Strategy for Mobile and Responsive Web Design, published in A Book Apart. The podcast is a series of more in-depth interviews about specific project or topics, rather than a general design talk.
Design Matters is THE design podcast. The host is the amazing Debbie Millman - writer, designer, educator, artist and brand consultant. In her interviews, she covers a wide range of topic and disciplines like graphic design, illustration, film, architecture, art and much more. If you want to widen your perspectives, this is a great place to start.
99% Invisible is one of the most popular podcasts on iTunes. This is high-quality production and content stuff. It focuses on the unnoticed details and thoughts that go into great design, architecture, and technology.
High Resolution is an amazing project by Bobby Ghoshal and Jared Erondu. In their series of 25 episodes, they interview the leaders of the product design industry. You can watch High Resolution on Youtube as a video or listen to it as a podcast. Each episode goes for a full hour, so this is a lot of video content!
If you are a freelance designer or thinking about becoming one, you shouldn't miss on the Resourceful Designer podcast. Mark Des Cotes gives very useful and practical tips on various aspect of running an own design business. His advice is always on point.
So there you have it! My favorite 11 podcasts on design. Tune in and enjoy.
